It is well known that Yorkshire was invaded several times by the Vikings around 900AD.

It would appear that the Danes invaded from the East, whilst the Norwegians sailed around Scotland and invaded from the West.

An analysis of the nordic origin of the local place names is the major evidence to support this theory.

It may also be conjectured that the differences in the Yorkshire dialect across the region may be partially due to these population differences.
