The Gough map of the mid 1300s is the earliest map of England and shows the major routes between the defensive castles.
It is not until the map of John Speede of 1610 that details of most of the centres of population are recorded.
On this map Laycock is spelt Lacok.
Numerous spellings are used on subsequent documents, which is not suprising as most information was passed by word of mouth in those days, and copied down differently on various occassions.
